It seems like every other month we are reminded that colorism is still alive and kicking strong. What’s even worse is that the loudest perpetrators are the black men and people of the community. Recently, aspiring model Mimi was rudely addressed on Twitter by a black man who stated; “If she was lighter, she’d be fire”. Mimi confidently responded by saying; “No thanks. I wouldn’t trade my skin color for the world. Still fire though.” Since then, the model has gotten even more hate, but double the blessings. The tweet went viral and the model has been featured on several well known publications including, Yahoo News and BET. How’s that for karma?
It excites me to see so many dark skinned women unapologetically stand tall in the face of colorism and brutally knock it on it’s ugly head. This situation with beautiful Mimi only proves that colorism is not “just an ugly girl problem” like some would claim, but instead a global epidemic that affects millions of women and girls worldwide. It should be constantly reminded that colorism is not merely a “preference” and comments like the one directed at Mimi are flat out disrespectful and uncalled for. Have your “preference”, but no need to announce it to the actual person who doesn’t meet your standards. That shouldn’t be hard to do.
Colorism is not something that should be ignored, but challenged every time with an bold response such as Mimi’s. DDS salutes you sis, and we wish you the best with all of your future endeavors.
