I’m not here to sell you a dream. Moving abroad isn’t a chance to escape everything you hate about America. There are good and bad people everywhere and racism, colorism and sexism are certainly not unique to the United States. However, there’s so many benefits to travelling regularly, immersing yourself in different cultures, learning new languages and all around exploring this colossal world we live in. Although there is no part of the world that has been specifically built with the safety and comfort of the black woman in mind, moving, studying or simply traveling abroad is an option for you and it can certainly be an opportunity to improve your quality of life.
Elain Lee, editor of the anthology “Go Girl: The Black Woman’s Book of Travel and Adventure”, stated in The Times, “The biggest surprise about traveling internationally was to discover that it is an asset to be a black woman, unlike in North America, where it is often a liability. Travel to Africa is among the most healing of all. You go there and get part of your soul back.”
Here are just a few of the reasons why more black women should consider going abroad:
1. Lower Cost of Living
Simply existing in North America is expensive. Especially in the United States, health care expenses and private education tuition can pile up quickly and place you in huge debt. However, there are parts of the world where living isn’t a liability. According to Forbes, cities like Bali, Indonesia, Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, and Playa del Carmen, Mexico and are just a few places where the cost of living is highly affordable.
